There is a strong\u00a0shift to mobile-based e-commerce from desktop which is lifting the prospects of some leading web merchants and depressing them for others.<\/p>\n<p>This competitive challenge to the e-commerce elite can be seen by comparing the world\u2019s 25 largest e-commerce competitors, as ranked by <a title=\"Global 1000 online database\" href=\"http:\/\/www.top500guide.com\/global-1000\/\" target=\"_blank\">Internet Retailer\u2019s recently released Global 1000 Database<\/a>, to the world\u2019s 25 largest mobile commerce competitors, which are ranked in <a title=\"Mobile 500 report\" href=\"https:\/\/www.internetretailer.com\/mobile500\/#!\/\" target=\"_blank\">IR\u2019s 2017 Mobile 500<\/a>, published earlier this month.<\/p>\n<p>Worldwide e-commerce leaders such as:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Dell (No. 6 in the Global 1000)<\/li>\n<li>Home Depot Inc. (No. 16)<\/li>\n<li>Costco Wholesale Corp. (No. 17)<\/li>\n<li>W.W. Grainger Inc. (No. 19)<\/li>\n<li>Best Buy Co. Inc. (No. 20)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>are nowhere to be found on the list of the 25 largest mobile commerce operators.\u00a0<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Conversely, 10 companies that appear among the 25 largest mobile commerce competitors are not among the 25 largest companies based on total e-commerce volume. They include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>ninth-ranked Jumei.com<\/li>\n<li>John Lewis PLC (No. 10)<\/li>\n<li>Etsy Inc. (No. 19)<\/li>\n<li>Newegg Inc. (No. 25).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>There are some external factors that affect these comparisons.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Principal among them is the home market of the e-retailers being compared. Seven of the top 25 mobile commerce players are based in China, where online shopping is overwhelmingly performed on mobile devices.<\/li>\n<li>Another factor may well be the client base that the retailer primarily serves.
